My teacher gave me an assignment "experience life" last week. I had been thinking how to finish it because I had never done any thing by myself before.

Mother was out today. It was a good chance to complete the assignment. Seeing the barrel was empty, I decided to fetch water from the well.

I took the empty barrel and went towards the well outside the yard. It snowed yesterday, so the alley was very slippery. A layer of thickice was frozen on the platform of the well. I was frightened by the sight, but I gathered my courage to walk towards it.

The alley was so slippery that I walked with difficultly. Suddenly, I slipped and fell down, water in the barrel totally poured down on the ground. I stepped on the platform carefully. After standing steadily and squatting down slowly, I hooked the barrel at the end of the rope and put the rope down slowly. I made an effort to drag the barrel up after it was filled with water. I was very careful because it was easy to slip and fall. Then, I carried the barrel of water and returned to my house. My figners were frozen stiff. I realized my effort was in vain. I hated myself.

I failed to finish the assignment but I did experience life through a trifle which seemed easy but difficult to do well. Such was my first experience of life.

目前，对研究方法的重视已经成了中国英语教育界关注的一大特点，不仅出现了许多国内外科研方法专著和本科生、硕士生毕业论文写作指南，而且成功举办了好几届青年学者教师科研研讨会。所有这些活动无疑已经或正在悄悄地影响、改变着课堂教学的不同方面。为中国教育改革的深化及科研水平上台阶发挥着不可低估的作用。 

我们发现。本科段论文指导教材几乎都没有涉及到研究方法问题，一方面和对本科生与硕士研究生的论文要求相关，与作者对本科段学士论文在研究方法的侧重持有不同看法也不无关系。Selinger＆Shohamy(1989)在不同章节列举并具体讨论了三组7类研究，相对比较系统、全面。目前，对于研究方法术语的使用中的交叉特性可能是造成划分研究种类的最大桎梏。Sel-inger＆Shohamy(1989)的基础研究、应用研究和实践研究划分实际上在很大程度上和演绎研究和归纳研究互有重叠，与质的研究与置的研究也有密切关系。据此，我们认为，就为了帮助本科论文作者了解不同的研究以便确定采用何种方法而言，我们没有必要把自己禁锢在逻辑意义上所谓外延的圈子里，而可以考虑不同侧面的划分。据此，参照目前常见文献书目，我们尝试把研究划分为八组，共16类如下： 

基础研究、应用研究和实践研究(Selinger＆Shohamy：1989) 

演绎研究和归纳研究[启发式](Selinger＆Shohamy：1989) 

质的研究与量的研究(Selinger＆Shohamy：1989；陈向明：2000) 

资料研究(Teitelbattm：1982；Brown：1988)和原创性研究(Brown：1988)

个案研究与统计研究(Brown：1988) 

历时(纵刨面)研究与共时(横刨面)研究(Ellis：1985) 

实证研究(Babbie：2005)与非实证研究需要注意两点。目前，对于研究类别划分的做法不尽相同。如Teitelbaum(1982)将研究大致分为资料研究与实验研究两类。社会科学研究(汪卫华：2006)依据研究方法的特点将研究划分为描述与解释两大类。而我们将个案研究与统计研究放到一起，创造出来一个非实证研究的做法也并非聪明之举。另外，除了以上划分的交叉特点以外，还可以继续划分，如实验研究又可划分为前期实验与类式与真实实验研究三种(文秋芳：2001)；再如实证研究又可进一步分为实验、调查、质的田野研究、量的研究、个案研究、评估研究与包括内容分析、数据分析、和比较与历史分析在内的其它研究(Babbie：2005)。 

 

 

2　选题 

 

选题至少应当考虑到三个方面：选择范围、选择标准与课题的具体化，即缩小研究范围。 

选择范围语言文学类专业学生可选课题非常广泛。从学科及学科分支的标准看，我们可以从语言内部与外部两个角度人手。仅从语言内部人手，我们就可以有以下七大技能的研究。即语音学、语法学、词汇学；听、说、读、写。从外部人手，我们至少可以有七大研究方向。即普通语言学、应用语言学、心理语言学、神经语言学、社会语言学、人类语言学。进一步的学科交叉又产生了教育心理学等研究方向；语言教育教学又可产生如教学理论、教学流派、教学方法与技巧、语言测试理论与实践等研究范畴。从教学具体内容看，我们还可有如何教听力、如何教会话、如何教阅读、如何教写作、听力测试、阅读测试、写作测试、口语测试、词汇测试、语音测试、语法测试等研究方向。对教学技术手段的关注又可以使我们涉足计算机辅助背景下如何进行语言教学改革及语言教学实践活动。 

翻译作为一门重要的学科即涉及翻译理论与实践，又涉及教学与文学与批评，因此我们便可以从翻译与翻译教学、翻译理论与实践、笔头翻译与口头翻译、文学翻译、翻译批评等多方面实施研究。 

作为与语言专业密切相关的文学研究，我们既可以从内部人手从文学理论与文学批评角度具体研究Wellek(1956)在《文学理论》中所说的存在方式、音律、文体、意象、隐喻、象征、神话、模式、类型、历史等方面，也可以从社会、文化、心理、思想及语言和其它艺术门类的角度进行所谓的外部研究。 

同样，教与学的进一步划分又使得我们可以从第一语言习得(学习)、第二语言习得(学习)、儿童语言学习机制以及相关理论的研究。而学科的精细又使我们的研究深入到语义学及语用学的范畴。 

选择标准根据Teitelbaum(1982)，选择研究课题最基本的标准有三个：①兴趣；②目的；③实用性。Slade(1997)提出了三个标准，和Teitelbaum(1982)大同小异：①重要性和兴趣；②可操作性；③资源的便捷性。 

就目前本科段的毕业论文设计而言，我们认为，应当注意以下几个方面： 

你是否了解你要研究的课题?了解多少?你的问题有无代表性? 

你所研究的课题的资料是否在图书馆书店以及网站上找到?多还是少? 

你所研究的课题在国内外是否已经有了明确的研究定论?你对于该课题的研究有无新意? 

你的指导教师对于你的选择是否满意? 

从目前我院本科生毕业论文设计与写作工作看，有无新意则是困扰论文作者最大的一个问题，也是指导教师最为关注的问题之一。对此，但从选题角度看，我们认为以往已经产生大量作品的题目并不是导致有无新意的关键。Slade(1997)认为，即便是学者们已经研究了的题目依然有很大的研究空间，尤其是一些指明的可供深入研究的领域或问题。我们以为，由于每个论文作者是一个独立的个体，在所受教育、生括及工作的环境以及经历等方面具有很大的差异性，因此，对待同一个问题的思路及观点也会千差万别。有鉴于此，论文写作的新意不完全和题目相关，更和看待文体的视角和写作过程密切相关。 

与选题标准密切相关的是课题范围的缩小。根据Teitel－baum(1982)，课题选定之后就应该缩小课题范围，并认为，影响缩小课题范围的几个因素为：字数限制、准备时间、图书资料以及读者。 

我们以为，真正影响缩小课题研究范围的内在因素有三个：已选定题目的外延越小，题目就越具体；对选定题目进行研究的一个点或者视角越细小，题目就越具体；给选定题目适当增加一到两个限定项以限定研究项目的环境或使得关键研究项目的内涵意义更加具体化也是缩小课题研究范围的办法。针对前两个办法，我们应当注意认为研究题目越小越好自勺误区，而应当同时关注研究课题的价值或者意义。据此，我们认为。研究课题最基本的标准不仅仅适合研究领域的确定，更适合课题研究范围的缩小。 

 

3　题目的设计 

 

论文题目的设计过程除了考虑以上因素外还必须考虑两大因素：①对问题的明确阐述；②英语论文标题的设计格式。 

研究领域是一个相对概念。课堂管理中的小组活动似乎比起语言教学和课堂管理要具体，好像可以成为一个题目，但它仍然可以是一个研究领域。要想深入研究，就必须考虑到活动的动态性、领导性、效果、材料及问任务的影响等(见Wallace：1998)。Wallace(1998)就小组活动举了五个使得题目具体化的例子，涉及到母语的使用、任务型活动中使用母语的情况、一所法语中学里任务型活动中使用母语的情况、一所法语中学里中级学生中任务型活动过程中使用母语的情况、个案研究：一所法语中学里中级学生中任务型活动过程中使用母语的情况(ibid：)。从中可以看出除了考虑把该领域的某个侧面作为研究重点，围绕中心词添加使用人及具体环境等手段也可以帮助我们缩小研究范畴，使题目更加具体。 

我们认为，对于研究问题的细化不仅对研究题目的确定有益，同时更有利于研究题目大纲的设计。因此，根据Wallace(1998：27)对小组活动的进一步明确与细化，我们可以把研究的关键放在互动模式和／或学生参与互动活动的积极性研究方面，也可以把教师角色作为小组活动的重点问题进行研究。 

接下来的问题就是如何把题目用恰当的词语表述清楚，主要牵扯到英语论文题目的设计格式与选词问题。 

英文论文题目和英文报刊标题的设计别无二致。在设计时应当考虑到读者的积极反应，因此，清晰、醒目、简洁、相关、独特大致都可以作为我们考虑的因素。具体来说，当读者看到文章的题目的时候，他们很快能看出，这篇文章： 

大致会涉及哪些问题心问题是什么题目是否容易懂句法是否简单、规范所涉及问题之间有无较强的逻辑性此类文章以前有没有读过，看了该题目想不想继续读文章。 

需要说明的是，目前对于英文论文题目的设计主要通过短语和句子二种形式。以下我们回顾的题目包括2006年22卷2-4《二语研究》中的13篇文章的题目、2003-5年16-18卷《应用语言学评论》中的25篇文章的题目，2001年55卷1-2《英语教学》中的14篇文章的题目，句法特点如下：
