摘要:Liang Qichao' s analysis of "freedom" in On Freedom is mainly focused onrevealing the evolution and variation of the term "freedom" in modem Chinese society. In hisview, freedom is not only an indispensable element of an individual's life, but also fully appli-cable to the course of social and historical development. Liang Qichao' s liberalism originatesdirectly from the West, but is deeply influenced by the Chinese traditional discourse systemand the overwhelming reality context of saving the nation in modem times. What is differentfrom Westem liberalism is that the dimensions of Liang Qichao' s freedom are developed attwo levels, one is the individual level, the other is the national level. The former has the signifi-cance of enlightenment, while the latter has the significance of saving lives. Enlightenment andsalvation are not only the "double variations" of modem China, but also the dual responsibili-ty of modem Chinese enlightenment thinkers, which is demonstrated in Liang Qichao' sthought of freedom.
